In ancient times, most artistic stone beads were manufactured such
that all steps were completed BEFORE the bead was drilled. This is
surprising, because you"d think that they wouldn"t want to lose the
work in the situation that a bead broke during drilling——and that it
would be more sensible to drill a rough-out and proceed to finish the
successfully-drilled bead. But, it went the other way. I guess the
implication is that beadmakers were reasonably confident that drilling
would be OK, after the rest of the work were completed.

The new reproduction zi beads are apparently made in Taiwan (as I have
reported). However, it"s also said that they are made in "China."
Are these different industries, or is this a political naming problem?
In other words is Taiwan part of "China" or not....? Are such beads
also made on the mainland, or not? I suspect not, but this could
change at any time.

Anyway, the Taiwan beads are a departure from ancient beads in that
they are perforated BEFORE they"re decorated. The white decoration
process (often called "etching") is frequently applied to the
perforation channel, making it white (or light colored). This is how
we can tell when the perforation was made in the sequence of
manufacture. The perforation had to already be there to be
lined-in-white. This is a primary way to distinguish Taiwan beads
from authentic ancient beads.
